Robert Hardy

Consultant Endocrine Surgeon

Parathyroid Surgery

In my personal practice the vast majority of patients undergoing parathyroid surgery can either go home on the day of surgery, or after an overnight stay.

There is very little specific care needed at home after parathyroid surgery performed by myself because I always use sutures (stitches) that dissolve and do not need to be removed, along with simple wound dressing strips that peel off after around a week.

Recovery after parathyroid surgery is usually fairly rapid, and people are often back to work and normal activities within 1-2 weeks after surgery.

Mr Hardy offers two types of parathyroid surgery: open parathyroidectomy and minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. In both operations it is possible to measure the PTH level during the operation, ensuring all abnormal parathyroid glands have been correctly identified, giving the highest chance of surgical success.

These two operations are now discussed:

Open Parathyroidectomy
Minimally Invasive Parathyroidectomy
